Getting mad with english
One of the most important and popular languages all roud the world is english as we all know. At school is important, actually it is one of the most important subjects,-or at least at my school is- I'm on sixth semestre and now I'm prepared as my teacher says for FCE level exam, I don't know what to think about it, it is a low level, isn't it? Or maybe I don't understand very well about the levels or stuff, but we as students are really prepared for this kind of exam?
While we were practising in classroom for tests, I noticed several problems in the teaching-learning process between teacher and students, that really worry me.
We were solving an exercise about reading and use of english, there were some different options to choose and mark in the answer sheet, and then I was almost sure the answer was 'despite' and then the teacher went and told "it is not despite, it is 'although', after 'despite' there will always be an 'of'''" Of course we know that's not correct, it'd be right if we were talking about 'in spite of' but no for 'despite', so here the very worst problem: Are teachers really prepared to teach us?
It's not the first time my teacher makes a mistake, I mean she is a human and makes mistakes but there are some big mistakes, in everything- spelling, pronunciation,etc.- I mean if someone is a teacher, she/he must know what is doing, must have the knowledge to teach, because if he/she doesn't then, how is supposed a student will learn?
I remember other ocassion when we were solving an exercise about modals, I asked her why the correct answer was 'have to' in the sentence "You____ drive on the left side in the UK" I wondered because I got it wrong I thought it'd be 'must' because for me is a very strong obligation -cause if you don't, you could smash into someone's car- she didn't know how to explain me, she told "Well for me sounds better with 'have to'" I was confused, I neeeded a best explanation to understand when to use a modal or another, so I asked when I could use one or another then, she got angry and told me a mistake wasn't important, that I could take it as right, but that wasn't the point for me, I wanted to learn why, instead I got a scream.
Now we're 'learning' in class, but there are times when we just stay all day sitting in the armchairs, we do not speak in english, and we don't practice listening and rarely get an explanation about certain topic. I did not did as well as I'd like to in last exam because it was a bit weird test. I mean I did not know when to use certain particle or word in a sentence, because we never revise them, there were some strange stuff as well, words that I had never seen before, even though I was always looking up for text to read in english, I found it really complicated.
Since I started high school I had to become autodidact because I don't think I receive the enough knowledge by teachers to do it well in an exam, cause in the class they teach you the abc, and then in the exam you have to write a essay about a literature english classic, while you're listening a man givin' a scientific explanation at the light speed. At least I feel a bit proud about all the stuff I've learnt by myself, of course it has been complicated and I have to learn a lot more, but I feel I'm doing it well.
I have been helped by some websites, it's been step by step, first of all, learn the basis; basic vocabulary, grammar, learn about pronunciation -phonetic alphabet is not that easy- and start listening . After all, you're able to learn more, advanced vocabulary, start writing a blog as I do, so you practice your writing, if you can get a native friend in social media it'd be great cause you could learn to talk, and also you could get a great friend for all life. Social media helps as well, you can start an account on Instagram and make friends. Reading is important too, you'll be able to have a better fluency, vocabulary and also writing.
I have learnt the important is never give up, it seems complicated sometimes, I've seen classmates suffering because english, but I had problems too, I had a lack of knowledge, but I tried and I did, and I'm doing and I won't give up until I have the enough I need to talk english at 100% per cent.
However, this doesn't apply only to this subject, it's a problem in all of them, and it is complicated, I'll write another post talking about other problems at school that nobody seems to understand but surely you'll feel identify with. Hope you liked this post, what do you think?
